What is Parli?

"Parli" is short for Parliamentary, a debate format like Team Policy and Lincoln Douglas. CLASH competes in Team Policy in NCFCA and also in Parli in NFL.

What is NFL?

NFL is the National Forensic League, the biggest high school debate league in the United States. Most public schools and many private schools are members of this league. CLASH is a dues-paying member of CFL.

What is CFL?

CFL is the Coast Forensic League, a district within CHSSA which is part of NFL. CFL includes some of the strongest speech and debate programs in California including Bellarmine Prep and Leland HS. They have a website here: CoastFL

What is CHSSA?

CHSSA is the California High School Speech Association. The CHSSA state championship is the terminal tournament of NFL in California, it is not a "feeder" tournament into a Nationals as one would find in NCFCA. CFL is part of "district 1" within CHSSA, which runs along the coast from approximately San Luis Obispo to the Oregon border. They have a website here: CHSSA

What is "Parli" like, compared to Team Policy?

Parli is like Team Policy in that there are two debaters on each team and the two teams take turns debating a resolution. Parli is different in that the resolution is new for every round. Teams are given access to the resolution 20 minutes before the round, the two teams are called Government and Opposition instead of Affirmative and Negative (echoing the conventions from the parliamentary form of government). There are six speeches instead of 8, and no "prep" time. In addition, Parli does not have separate cross-examination sequence following a constructive speech, but instead Parli debaters can accept questions from the other team at certain points during a speech, which can make the rounds very dynamic. There are a few different types of resolutions, most concern current events. Due to the current events emphasis and lack of prep time, Parli is a great compliment to those students who are already competing in Team Policy, Extemp, and Impromptu. Parli is also a popular college debate format.

Is Parli the only type of debate in NFL?

In addition to Parli, the NFL has Team Policy and LD just like NCFCA. NFL also has "Congress", and "Public Forum". There are other differences between the two leagues in IEs: for example NFL has two different Extemp events (domestic and international), and only NCFCA has Apologetics.

If NFL has Team Policy, why doesn't CLASH debate in that too?

Both NFL and NCFCA have Team Policy debate, but each league has a separate resolution, the topics are not synchronized. There is no formal barrier to debating two different resolutions in the same season, but most normal people require sleep, food, and other time consuming activities in their life besides evidence research.

Does NFL have a Nationals?

Yes, NFL has a Nationals, but "Parli" isn't a Nationals event. CHSSA offers more events in California than are run at the national level.

Which league is bigger?

NFL is a LOT bigger than NCFCA. In CHSSA, hundreds of students compete in each event to reach the state championship. In fact, the CHSSA state championship is more than twice as large as an NCFCA Nationals, measured by # of competitors.
